Women's Initiative

The Women's Initiative (WI) celebrates the power of women to bring about positive change in our community through philanthropy and service. Our vision is to provide opportunities for women of all ages and backgrounds to invest their time, talents, and treasures to:

  • Increase women's awareness of Middlesex United Way;
  • Promote and increase philanthropic giving to United Way;
  • Increase participation of women in volunteering;
  • Raise awareness of the resources that women bring to the community; and
  • Promote and recognize women's accomplishments.

Our Fund Distribution

The Women's Initiative is pleased to make available small, one-time grants to eligible local organizations that support one or more of our focus areas (see our goals at right). Applications are reviewed by the WI Leadership Council on an ongoing basis.

Download a WI Funding Application. This file contains a cover sheet and form. Please be sure to carefully read the cover letter which has important guidelines and instructions for your request. If you would like to have an application emailed to you instead contact Georgie Leone at georgie.leone@middlesexunitedway.org.

The WI is delighted to announce our most recent grants as approved in May 2010:

  • $400 to the Mother's Day Diaper Appeal to purchase disposable diapers;
  • $1,000 to Even Start Family Literacy for the purchase of safety equipment and required furniture so the program may meet eligibility standards for state funding; and
  • $500 to Teenzone to provide scholarships for two young women to attend the program aimed at building self esteem.

Women's Monthly Networking Breakfast

Please join us every other month for an opportunity to meet and network with women like you. Enjoy a delicious breakfast on your way to work, take the chance to connect with other women from the area, and learn about volunteer opportunities and informative topics where you live. Breakfast begins at 8:00; the speaker goes on at 8:30. The cost is $10 per person.

The next breakfast is on Wednesday, September 29th at Middlesex Health Care Center, 100 Randolph Road in Middletown. Click here for directions to Middlesex Health Care Center.

If you would like to be added to the contact list for receiving future email notifications of the networking breakfasts, contact Georgie Leone at georgie.leone@middlesexunitedway.org.

The Goals of the Women's Initiative

We focus our time and talents strengthening three different areas affecting the lives of women and children in Middlesex County:

  • Early Childhood Development - parents and children have the resources they need for children's healthy development;
  • Empowering Young Women - young women have the resources and support they need to make healthy choices; and
  • Financial Stability - women of all ages have the education and resources to be independent and self-sufficient.

We invite you to join us and Live United!

Annual membership in the WI is just $25 and helps to support our work.
